The Rajahnate of Cebu


•Founded by Sri Lumay in the 13th century

•By the time the Spaniards arrived in 1521, Cebu was already a well established and wealthy international trading port with routes to Japan & China (perfume, glass and ceramics) with India, Malaysia & Burma  (precious stones and sugar)

•The harbors became know as sinibuayng hinapit which was then shortened to sibu or sibo (meaning to trade)

•Pigafetta was astonished at the amount of wealth of the ruling classes and at the intricacy of the Pintados’ body art
